Two Very Different Kinds of Punta Gorda Floors

Punta Gorda is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County, with a population of roughly 19,500, and for a small city it has remarkably varied housing. LVP flooring installation in Punta Gorda means something different depending on which side of US-41 you are on.

West of downtown, Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles are deed-restricted canal communities of slab-on-grade homes with sailboat access to Charlotte Harbor. These houses tend to have big open great rooms, walls of sliding glass facing the water, and tile everywhere. Owners call us when they want something warmer and quieter than tile in the bedrooms and den, or when they are updating a 1980s home and want a modern wide-plank look throughout.

East of 41, the historic district is another world: brick-paved streets, tin roofs, and wood-frame homes raised on piers, some more than a century old. There is no slab here at all. The subfloor is plank or plywood over a crawlspace, and preparing it for vinyl plank is carpentry rather than concrete work.

Sliders, Sun, and Waterfront Rooms

Waterfront homes in PGI get intense afternoon sun through west- and south-facing sliders, and direct sun can heat a floor well above room temperature. For those rooms we steer customers toward dense SPC rigid core products, which stay dimensionally stable in heat, and we are careful to leave the full manufacturer expansion gap at the slider track. In very large sun-exposed rooms we may recommend glue-down plank instead. It is a small decision that prevents peaked seams a couple of summers down the road.

Wood Subfloors in the Historic District

In the older homes near Retta Esplanade, Gill Street, and West Olympia Avenue, we begin by checking the subfloor for movement, squeaks, and old water damage. Loose boards are screwed down, damaged sections are replaced, and where the original plank subfloor is too uneven we install a thin plywood underlayment to create a smooth surface. A quality vinyl plank in a heart-pine or weathered oak visual respects the character of these houses while standing up to humidity in a way that solid wood flooring struggles to.

Condos and Seasonal Homes

Punta Gorda has a large seasonal population and many condominium communities along the harbor and near Fishermen's Village. For upstairs units we install the acoustic underlayment the association requires and can provide product data sheets for your board approval. For snowbirds, we schedule summer installations while the home is empty and coordinate access with your home-watch service, so you return in the fall to a finished floor.

After Charley and Ian

Punta Gorda took a direct hit from Hurricane Charley in 2004 and saw serious damage again from Ian in 2022. Much of the city was rebuilt or renovated after Charley, which means plenty of 20-year-old carpet and laminate is now reaching the end of its life. Waterproof vinyl plank is the natural replacement, and it is what most of our Punta Gorda customers choose.
